In 1976 a neighbourhood of 2000 families in Liverpool was told by the City Council that it would be demolished and all the people would be scattered across the city. Some chose to go but most decided to stay and fight for a new neighbourhood that they would create, with a little help from their friends’. The Eldonian Village was the result and it is the best example of a ’sustainable community’ in the UK.

Jack will talk about:

• The story of these brave people and their professionals
• The political context within which this struggle took place
• The role played by professionals, particularly, the architects, at a time when ‘Community Architecture’ had not yet been ‘invented’
• What are the lessons to be learned for us today, especially for emerging new architects
