Due to another late lecturer cancellation, SUAS has had to change the speaker for this week’s lecture. Instead of our advertised speaker, Peter Blundell Jones will be discussing his new book on Gunnar Asplund, published earlier this year by Phaidon.
The time and venue remain unchanged: 18h00, Thursday 23 November, floor 15 lecture room. Our apologies for those hoping to hear Scott Farlow speak.

PLEASE NOTE: this event will now take place on floor 16 in the well, and not on floor 15 as advertised on the posters.

No matter how much you love the Arts Tower, our department has always come up short in terms of social space - a place at the heart of the school where students, staff and researchers from different programmes and floors can meet, intermingle. The floor 19 café is tremendously popular, but has limited hours and is hardly in heart of the school. The 16th floor shop is also a valuable and even profitable resource, but the difficulty in finding students with time to staff it has always limited its potential.
This Friday, SUAS offers you a one hour lunchtime workshop to help brainstorm some ‘blue sky’ ideas for the future of the school’s social spaces. Should the 19th floor café and and 16th floor shop be combined? Should the shop sell snacks, booze or bakewell tarts? Or should both be closed and used for much needed office and teaching space?
It’s over to you to find out. Bring your lunch and SUAS will provide some big bowls of fresh fruit. The session will start with a brief presentation by Prue Chiles about the recent developments from the Whole School Strategy, and then we’ll go to work. The ideas that come out of the workshop will then be presented to the school and to departmental management. We look forward to seeing you on Friday.

This Thursday, SUAS Film Night presents something a bit special…
“The greatest film about Architecture ever made,
The worst film about architecture ever made.”
- Jeremy Till
THE FOUNTAINHEAD
dir. King Vidor, 1949
17h00, Thursday 16 November
Lecture theatre ten (on the 19th floor)
SUAS / Landmark members free
SUAS Membership on sale
Individualistic and idealistic architect Howard Roark is expelled from college because his designs fail to fit with existing architectural thinking. He seems unemployable but finally lands a job with like-minded Henry Cameron, however within a few years Cameron drinks himself to death, warning Roark that the same fate awaits unless he compromises his ideals. Roark is determined to retain his artistic integrity at all costs.
Oh yes, ladies and gentlemen, architecture meets melodrama in this classic piece of forties cinema. The evening will be introduced by Jeremy Till, and we’ll be heading to the pub afterwards to discuss the film. Since the Star & Garter has gone a bit Wetherspoon-ish since its refurbishment, we’ll be heading to the Bath Hotel, five minutes from the Arts Tower on Victoria Street. Head down to West Street and turn down the third street on the right, just before the Swim Inn.
See you Thursday.

What would be your nightmare crit? How about one that you were expected to present which you knew nothing about? SUAS invites you to join us on Thursday evening from 18h in room 15.9A (enter off the lift lobby) as a specially invited panel of staff and student presenters show you ten slides… the only catch is, we haven’t told them what those ten slides will be. They have ten minutes each to deliver the most convincing presentation on ten images that they haven’t seen before.
Everyone in the audience will have a chance to vote for their favourite speaker - you get to choose the speak who you feel has been the one who pulls off their presentation with the most style, elan and flair. The winner will walk away with a reasonably priced bottle of something, meanwhile everyone who votes will go into a prize draw for another as-yet-undecided-but-doubtless-excellent prize.
The event is open to all; drinks will be on sale beforehand and during the intermission while we count the votes.
